In Loving Memory of Mark Wayne Poteat Mark Wayne Poteat, 70, of Candler, NC, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 26, 2026, at 11:05pm following a tragic tractor-trailer accident in Lee County, South Carolina. Mark was born on June 17, 1956, in Reidsville, North Carolina, to the late Linwood Thomas Poteat and Virginia Sunshine Poteat. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, faithful brother, hard worker, and cherished friend. Mark was united in marriage to his beloved wife, Kimberly Poteat, with whom he shared a life filled with love, perseverance, faith, and countless memories for 40 years. He was a dedicated provider who worked tirelessly for his family. He was also a source of encouragement to many, always willing to listen, offer advice, pray with a friend, or simply remind someone that they could make it through another difficult day. Mark's faith in Jesus was an important part of his life. His work often took him many miles from home, but his Bible was frequently beside him on the dashboard as he traveled. He sought the Lord in the midst of his everyday life and trusted in God's grace through both the good and difficult seasons. In addition to his wife, Kimberly, Mark is survived by his children, Allison Poteat, Chastity Lynn, Mark Poteat Jr. and wife Brittney, Summer Messer and husband Travis, Zaiden Poteat, Brandi Crouse, Touree Poteat, and Bill Poteat; and his grandchildren, Brandon, Abbie, Makayla, Logan, Lucas, Brooklyn, Isabella, Jaxxon, Zayne, Chevy, Lilith, Caspian and Abbigail. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Phyllis Poteat, his nephews, Pete Poteat and Jay Watkins. In addition to his parents, Linwood Thomas and Virginia Sunshine Poteat, Mark was preceded in death by his sister, Jo Ann Watkins, and his granddaughter, Tabitha Miller. Mark will be remembered for his strong work ethic, generous heart, devotion to his family, willingness to help others, and steadfast love for Jesus and those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue through his family and the many lives he touched. Our Election Integrity Warrior Queen, Carol Snow, who is always looking out for us, sent the email below to Senator Warren Daniel, Rep Hugh Blackwell (Sponsor of H958), and others, regarding the false claim "...that anyone attempting to vote in the name of a deceased voter would have to produce a photo ID containing the deceased person’s picture, personal information, and date of birth." That is simply not accurate under current North Carolina law and practice. Photo ID – Not Required to Vote As you both know from the voter ID law (Session Law 2018-144 / NCGS 163-166.16), photo ID is required, but there are multiple exceptions. See NCSBE “Voter ID Overview”. See NCDEM “No Photo ID? You can still vote!”. A voter who does not present photo ID may complete and sign a Photo ID Exception Form and cast a provisional ballot. Under the current administrative rule, the provisional ballot must be counted unless the county board finds by majority vote that the Photo ID Exception Form (affidavit) is false. The burden is on the board members to find falsity; the affidavit is presumed to be true. [08 NCAC 17 .0101(e), as amended and approved July 16, 2026] This same reliance on photo ID as a backstop against voting with ineligible or duplicate registrations was raised during the April 11, 2024 HAVA Administrative Complaint hearing. Board Member Jeff Carmon asked whether the photo ID requirement would stop the problem of ineligible or duplicate registrations remaining on the rolls. As I explained at that time, the existence of the Photo ID Exception Form means it does not. Date of Birth – Not Required to Vote Additionally, at the polling place the primary verification is the voter’s name and address. Voters are not required to provide a date of birth when checking in at the polls. In my own experience voting, I have never been asked for my date of birth at check-in. If that procedure has changed, I am not aware of it. See Election Official Resource Guide – pages 62-68. Ineligible Registrations Present a VulnerabilityCitizen analysts, including myself, have identified thousands of cases in which the same individual appears to have two registration records — one that was properly removed as deceased (reason code RD) and another that remains in an eligible status (Active or Inactive). In those situations, a bad actor could appear at the polls, give the name and address of the still-eligible record, and vote without needing to present a photo ID or provide the date of birth of the deceased voter. Many of the likely deceased registrations identified by citizen analysts were never submitted for matching against the SAVE database because the personal identifying information was either never collected (Registration Repair voters) or could not be verified as accurate. In other words, citizen analysts have located likely deceased voters not flagged by the SAVE match. While voters on the Registration Repair list are required to vote provisionally and provide personal identifying information, that information is not required to be accurate under N.C.G.S. § 163-166.12(d). In practice, a utility bill (which can be easily fabricated) is accepted as sufficient documentation to satisfy the identity requirement. From Sen Daniel’s response, it appears the Republican members of the General Assembly are prepared to accept the vulnerabilities created by leaving ineligible registrations on the official voter rolls for the upcoming federal election. That is a risk I believe is both unnecessary and avoidable. I remain willing to provide specific examples of the duplicate deceased/eligible pairs if either of you would find them useful. I am busy on multiple fronts to plan specific campaign activities including direct mail, texting, phone calling, advertising, signage, block walking and poll greeting. I also have to continue to raise funds. I have raised about half of what I need to run the campaign. For all who have donated once or multiple times, I greatly appreciate your support! Several items: I have my yard signs now. I have dropped off some at the GOP headquarters, but happy to arrange to get you some if you want them. I will be putting up two large 4x8’ signs this week on Spartanburg Hwy (thanks to Jeff Justus) and on Kanuga (thanks to Marilyn Gordon). I have a couple locations in town for 2.5x4’ signs as well and they should go up soon. I am looking for additional locations of major corridors in the city if you know of any locations. I am planning on block walking and will be looking for volunteers. I have 5 Saturdays starting 9/12-10/10 targeted for concentrated efforts focused primarily on HV1 and HV3. Corrine and I will focus on HV-2 personally, and we will do as much as we can in other precincts. Block walking is very important. We are targeting about 3,800 households for block walking, but it will depend on the number of volunteers. While it seems early to discuss, it was important to get my plans in place to order the collateral needed. Here is the link to sign up. Wanted to update you on my campaign...and some things I need! Hendersonville City Council race. We had good response at the 4th of July Parade! Thanks to all who helped with that. We got good feedback from the crowd on my “common sense” theme. Here is a video of that event. I was interviewed on the Kudzu Project Podcast and that will air Monday. I will also post that on my FB page. I plan on having a table at the Asheville Gun & Knife Show in Fletcher on 7/18 and 7/19. While that show draws a lot of folks from all over, there are always a lot of folks from Hendersonville, or know those who live in the city so I think it will be worth my time. I am working with some of you on locations for larger signs and I greatly appreciate that help, but am in need of locations on Spartanburg Hwy, Church and/or King or other major thoroughfares in the city. Or if you are in the city and want to put a 2.5x4’ or 1.7x3’ sign in your yard, that would be good. I will have smaller yard signs but right now I want to focus on getting some larger signs placed. My focus will start to shift now to planning for block walking, direct mail, mass texting, and advertising. None of that will start likely until late August or early September, but I have a lot of work to do to get ready. I am always looking for opportunities to speak to groups so if you can facilitate that with groups you are involved with, I would also greatly appreciate that.
