The U.S. Department of Education announced on Monday that it has rescinded the Biden administration’s 2024 Title IX regulations, officially reinstating the 2020 framework that ties federal sex-discrimination protections strictly to biological sex.
The move eliminates the previous Democrat administration’s expansion of Title IX, which had extended protections to cover “gender identity” and sexual orientation.
Education Department officials emphasized that the action brings federal guidance back in line with the original 1972 statute, providing educational institutions across the country with definitive compliance standards regarding single-sex spaces and athletic participation.
Addressing the policy shift, Education Secretary Linda McMahon highlighted that the rescission rests on basic distinctions between male and female athletics.
