Minnesota Democratic state Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed early Saturday morning in an act of “targeted political violence,” Governor  Tim Walz  said during a press conference Saturday. Hortman and her husband, Mark, were pronounced dead Saturday morning after a gunman posing as law enforcement arrived at their home in the early hours and shot them. Walz called the shooting “a politically motivated assassination.” The gunman, who remains at large, had targeted the home of Hortman after shooting Senator John Hoffman and his wife at their home. Asian Americans For Progressive America (AAPA) is a California-based  political action committee  promoting an upcoming national protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) targeted enforcement operations, according to  announcements  and  flyers . AAPA’s  president , Elaine Peng, also  serves  as an executive for United Chinese Americans (UCA), a Washington, D.C.- based  nonprofit that has  received  U.S. government grants worth roughly  $370,000  for a mental health program it runs called WAVES, for which Peng is the “director of training.” UCA  claims  to be focused on “enriching and empowering Chinese American communities through civic engagement” and has often  invoked  racial discrimination as the reason it  holds  protests against U.S. national security  initiatives  and  immigration enforcement . However, translated Chinese government and state media reports reveal a significant number of the nonprofit’s leaders have also served as members of the Chinese  government ,  Chinese Communist Party  (CCP), and/or Beijing’s intelligence  arms , raising concerns among analysts about foreign influence. I've been carefully placing each tiny gem, watching the picture slowly take shape - mountains standing proud in the distance, an American flag waving strong, and an eagle soaring overhead, embodying resilience and freedom.  Each diamond they press onto the canvas is quiet movement of focus, a small victory, a step forward in my journey. At first the process felt painstaking, each section a challenge to conquer, much like the path I've been walking for the past two years.  But as time passed, it became a meditation- a reminder of patience, perseverance, and purpose. On difficult days, I've found solace in the repetition, in the satisfaction of watching the image build piece by piece.  Each sparkle reflects their strength, the hard-earned clarity that comes with my sobriety.  Now, as the artwork is completed, I see more than just a beautiful picture.  I see a testament to my journey-a representation of the mountains I've climb, the freedom that've reclaimed, and the soaring spirit that refuses to be held down.  Soon I'll step back, and take in the full image, and know, without a doubt, that I've created something truly meaningful, both on the canvas and in my own life. A controversial ruling by U.S. District Judge Richard E. Myers II has ignited a firestorm of protest, with United Sovereign Americans (USA) accusing the judge of disenfranchising North Carolina voters by ordering the certification of Democratic Justice Allison Riggs in the state's 2024 Supreme Court election. The dispute centers on tens of thousands of ballots cast by voters with unverified identities. Republican Judge Jefferson Griffin, who narrowly lost the election by 734 votes, had sought to disqualify over 60,000 ballots lacking either a Social Security number or a North Carolina driver’s license, as mandated by state law. However, on May 5, 2025, Judge Myers ruled against Griffin's request, leading to the certification of Riggs' victory. Read more here .

For decades, radical gender ideology activists have been working to weaponize Child Protective Services (CPS) against U.S. parents by accusing them of “abuse” if they do not affirm and recognize their child’s “gender identity.” It’s critical we prevent this from happening in North Carolina , and it’s crucial that your representative hear from you. >> Take Action: Contact your North Carolina representative and urge them to support HB 560 . HB 560 , the Parents Protection Act , would clearly define abuse and ensure that parents who raise children in a way consistent with their biological sex can not have them removed from their home or be charged with abuse or neglect for protecting their child from irreversible, experimental hormones and surgeries. Urge your representative to vote YES on HB 560 before the crossover deadline on Thursday - bills must pass by this deadline or they are dead for the session. Many parents in other states have already lost custody of their children to state systems that sign off on harmful drugs and procedures in order to “transition” their child, or transfer custody of an “affirming” parent or guardian. Children in state custody have multiple times the risk of actual abuse, including drug use and sex trafficking. While some may claim this could never happen in North Carolina, there are already reasons for concern. Numerous school districts in North Carolina have policies to keep so-called “gender affirming” care provided to students a secret from parents, and in North Carolina, school personnel are “mandatory reporters” of abuse ( see the list here ). The ONLY time a state should ever remove a child is for actual abuse, not to impose a destructive ideology held by a parent or state. Newly Republican controlled NC elections board votes to oust its longtime director In its first meeting Wednesday, the new Republican majority on the North Carolina State Board of Elections voted to replace the agency’s longtime director with a lawyer who worked for state Republican leaders. In a 3-2 vote, the board appointed Samuel Hayes as its executive director, ousting current director Karen Brinson Bell, who has served in the position since 2019. Since 2021, Hayes has served as general counsel for the North Carolina speaker of the House, both under Tim Moore and Destin Hall. Hayes was not present at the meeting, and members of the board discussed his appointment in closed session, not commenting on his qualifications during the vote. In a statement, State Auditor Dave Boliek, who appointed the board’s new Republican majority, said, “Sam has the experience and integrity to properly manage the State Board of Elections. He’s worked across state agencies, and as an accomplished attorney he brings a sharp legal mind to the table. With his background and dedication, I’m confident in his leadership capabilities to improve election management in North Carolina.
