The lack of legislative action by the State Senate on this bill contributes to public distrust of our elections.  Moreover, it greatly complicates the new Auditor's ability to ensure the NCSBE does its job effectively.  You have the opportunity now to fix this glaring deficiency.   There are two or more scheduled sessions of the NCGA prior to adjournment.  Please endeavor to pass this bill and then to override the likely gubernatorial veto that will ensue.  This action is very important to citizens statewide. North Carolina’s constitution requires that voters be residents of the state. But a state statute currently in place violates this requirement, opening the door for individuals who have never resided in the state to vote, a newly filed lawsuit alleges. Congress established the Uniformed and Overseas Citizen Absentee Voting Act ( UOCAVA ) in 1986, permitting military service members and select other overseas citizens to register and vote in federal elections. This bill would require proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote. That’s it. Yet, the left is up in arms, claiming it will “devastate voter registration efforts.” That’s nonsense. This bill is about protecting American elections and ensuring only U.S. citizens decide the future of our country. Proof of Citizenship: A Common-Sense Requirement The law already says only U.S. citizens can vote. But here’s the problem: Most states don’t require any proof of citizenship when people register. They take applicants at their word. That’s an open invitation for fraud. Imagine walking into a bar and saying, “Trust me, I’m 21.” Would they serve you a drink? Of course not. You need to show an ID. Yet, some want us to believe that requiring proof of citizenship to vote is somehow too much to ask. That’s absurd. Voting is far more important than buying a beer. It should be protected just as much—if not more. The Left’s Flimsy Arguments Opponents claim the SAVE Act would make it harder for Americans to register. They point to college students, married women, and those without passports. Let’s break this down. College Students : If you’re a citizen, you have a birth certificate. If you’re responsible enough to vote, you’re responsible enough to get a copy if you don’t already have one. It’s not hard. Married Women : Millions of women change their names when they get married. They update their Social Security records, driver’s licenses, and bank accounts. They can update their voter registration, too. People Without Passports : It’s true—many Americans don’t have passports. But you don’t need a passport to prove citizenship. A birth certificate or naturalization document works just fine.   These arguments are just excuses. The truth is, proving citizenship is easy for anyone who is legally eligible to vote. Why This Matters Non-citizens are getting on voter rolls. A report from the Public Interest Legal Foundation found that thousands of non-citizens have been registered to vote in multiple states. Some even cast ballots. This isn’t speculation—it’s fact. Even one illegal vote cancels out the legitimate vote of an American citizen. That’s unacceptable. Democrats claim voter fraud isn’t a big deal. But how would they know? When you don’t require proof of citizenship, you don’t know who’s voting. That’s the whole problem. Americans Support Voter ID Laws The American people get it. Poll after poll shows overwhelming support for voter ID laws. A 2021 Rasmussen poll found that 75% of Americans—including majorities of Republicans, Democrats, and independents—support requiring proof of citizenship to vote. If Americans need ID to drive, board a plane, or even pick up some cold medicine, why shouldn’t they need to prove they’re citizens before voting? The Bottom Line The SAVE Act isn’t radical. It’s common sense. It ensures that only U.S. citizens vote in our elections. It prevents fraud. And it restores trust in our democratic process. The fact that Democrats are fighting so hard against this bill should tell you everything you need to know. Call your representative. Demand they support the SAVE Act.
